The special landscape of Royal Deeside and The Cairngorms produce the very best of home grown ingredients and our farmers markets are the ideal place to meet local producers to hear about the origins of the produce on sale. The farmers and stall holders are only too happy to chat and I love to learn about the full cycle of food production and what’s happening on their farms at any particular time of year. Of course it’s not just meat, seafood, cheese, artisan bread, and veg on offer…last month I came home with a leg of lamb some pork pies and an amazing organic woollen scarf all from the same farmer, Laurel at Wark Farm. The scarf was supposed to be a present for a friend but it proved to be just too lovely to give away! I’m now saving up for a throw and possibly some cushions too!
Shopping at the farmers markets makes you really appreciate your food and the effort gone into producing it – you just wouldn’t dare waste any of it and as well as coming home armed with fresh local produce, I often come home with a new recipe or two! And ….it certainly beats fighting your way round the aisles of the supermarkets.
Most markets have an array of craft and gift stalls too so you can take a wee something back home after your break on Royal Deeside….a wooden bowl, some local honey, a beeswax candle, organic soap, a beautiful organic wool throw…..
